We verify that the phone number they provide for the business is a valid number for the state in which they operate. Crooks often will purchase a local phone number from an online service that provides this type of service, to make it look as if they are local. We are generally able to verify if the number is a purchased one through an online service or one actually provided from the local phone company.
We physically call the company and speak with them on the phone. During this interview we will again confirm the answer to a series of questions such as how long they have been in business, what their hours of operation are, how they handle customer complaints, and more.
We conduct extensive online research to determine if there are any existing complaints against the company, we check with the BBB to see if there are any complaints, and a series of other records checks to see if anything negative shows up.
We test the functionality of their online shopping cart to make certain it offers secure ordering with a valid secure web certificate, that the company has an acceptable online privacy statement and that the online shopping experience is one that we would generally consider safe and would use ourselves.
We independently verify the identity of the person signing up for our service when they pay our small annual registration fee. We use a sophisticated fraud detection system that verifies their identity at the time they make their purchase.
Only after the merchant has passed these qualifications do we offer our Verified Merchant Trust Seal Of Approval.
